Much excitement has been caused in our house as we set the children to bed. We have our neighbour, Klaus to thank, who told us that in Germany, on the 5th of December, children place their shoes outside their houses with their Christmas letters in. Saint Nicholas comes and takes the letters, and if the children have been good, the shoes are filled with sweets and chocolate. If they have not been good, then the shoes are filled with stones, sticks and dirt.
Christmas letters done, shoes put outside and two children who are very excited, although Maya did have a pang of nervousness as she went to bed. Our alternative european Christmas is beginning though, taking in not Italian traditions to start with, but German ones instead. Thanks Klaus!
